Refrigerator Repair vs Replace
Our technicians get this question on nearly every fridge call. The right answer depends on the unit's age, the failed component, and whether the manufacturer still stocks parts. Below: the framework we use.
| Dimension | Option A | Option B |
|---|---|---|
| Typical lifespan | Repair worth considering: 10-15 years | Replace if 15+ years and major failure |
| Compressor failure cost | $450-900 (parts + 1-2 hours labor) | New comparable unit: $1,500-3,000+ |
| Control board / inverter | $280-650 โ usually replace it | Replace fridge if 12+ years AND third major part |
| Sealed-system leak (R-600a) | Repair only if unit is 5 years or newer | Replace if 8+ years โ leaks tend to recur |
| Built-in / paneled (Sub-Zero, Wolf, Miele, Liebherr) | Almost always repair โ $15k+ replacement | Replace only if frame/cabinet damage |
| Energy efficiency gain | Stays the same after repair | New ENERGY STAR uses 30-40% less power |
Our verdict
Rule of thumb: if the repair quote is more than 50% of replacement cost AND the unit is over 8 years old, replace. Built-in luxury brands almost always repair.
Pick Option A when:
- โUnit is under 10 years old
- โComponent cost under $400
- โBuilt-in / paneled (Sub-Zero, Wolf, Thermador, Miele, Liebherr)
- โFirst major repair in unit's lifetime
- โHas features you can't easily replace (custom panel, integrated water dispenser)
Pick Option B when:
- โUnit is over 15 years old
- โRepair quote is 50%+ of replacement cost
- โMultiple major failures in past 2 years
- โSealed-system refrigerant leak on a 10+ year unit
- โEnergy efficiency is a priority (modern units 30-40% better)
FAQs
How do I know my refrigerator's exact age?
Look at the model + serial plate (usually inside on a side wall or front bottom). Most brands encode the manufacture date in the serial number โ Whirlpool uses the first 2 letters, LG uses the 4th digit, Samsung uses position 8. Or just call us with the model and we'll tell you.
Should I repair a compressor on a 12-year-old fridge?
Usually no โ unless it's a built-in. By 12 years, other components (control board, defrost system, door seals) are also nearing end-of-life. Replacement is typically the better call.
Is the $90 diagnostic fee waived if I decide to replace instead?
The $90 diagnostic is waived if you authorize a repair with us. If you decide to replace, the $90 covers the diagnostic time and our written quote โ which you can use to compare against a new appliance purchase.
Will repairing extend the life of my fridge by another 10 years?
Maybe 5-7 years on average. A single repair on a 10-year-old fridge usually buys you another 3-5 years before the next failure. Built-in luxury units are different โ they're designed for 25+ year service lives with periodic part replacement.
