What it means

The C1 error code on a GE dishwasher indicates a drain timeout fault. During the drain cycle, the main control board energizes the drain pump and monitors the water level via the pressure sensor or float switch. If the water level does not drop to the empty state within the programmed time limit (typically 90 to 120 seconds), the board interrupts the cycle and throws the C1 code. This is a protective measure to prevent the wash pump from running dry and to stop potential overflows if the unit attempts to fill again. The fault lies either in a physical blockage in the drain path, a failing drain pump motor, or a malfunctioning sensor falsely reporting water in the tub.

   A physical blockage in the corrugated drain hose, the sink air gap, or the garbage disposal connection restricts water flow, causing the tub to drain too slowly.

   Food debris, broken glass, or labels can bypass the coarse filter and obstruct the drain pump impeller, severely reducing its pumping capacity.

   The drain pump motor windings may fail open, or the impeller may strip from the motor shaft. In either case, the pump receives 120V but fails to move water.

How to clear / reset

To temporarily clear the C1 error code, press the Start/Reset button to cancel the current cycle. Wait 2 minutes for the dishwasher to attempt a forced drain. If the code persists, perform a hard reset by disconnecting power at the breaker for 5 minutes. Reconnect power and run a short rinse cycle to test. Note that if there is standing water or a physical blockage, the C1 code will immediately return during the next drain phase. You must resolve the underlying drainage issue to permanently clear the code.
