What it means

The 5C error code on a Samsung washing machine indicates a drain fault. Specifically, the main control board (PBA) monitors the water level via the pressure sensor (water level switch). If the frequency signal from the pressure sensor does not indicate an empty tub within a predetermined time frame—typically 10 to 15 minutes after the drain pump is energized—the system halts the cycle and flags the 5C error. This is a protective measure to prevent the washer from advancing to the spin cycle while full of water, which could cause severe mechanical damage, excessive vibration, or flooding. While often confused with the '5E' code (which means the exact same thing on older 7-segment displays), the 5C code strictly points to a restriction in the drain path, a mechanical failure of the drain pump motor, or an electrical discontinuity in the pump circuit.

Likely Causes

   The most common culprit. Lint, coins, or small garments block the pump filter located at the bottom front of the washer, preventing water flow to the impeller.

   A kinked external drain hose or a severe blockage in the corrugated internal tub-to-pump hose will restrict water discharge and trigger the timeout.

   Faulty Drain Pump Motor

   The drain pump motor may have failed electrically (open windings) or mechanically (sheared impeller or seized bearings), preventing it from evacuating water even when receiving 120V.

How to clear / reset

To temporarily clear the 5C error code, power down the washer and unplug it from the wall for 3 to 5 minutes to reset the control board. Before restarting, you must manually drain the tub using the emergency drain hose located next to the debris filter at the bottom front of the machine. Once the water is evacuated, remove and clean the debris filter thoroughly. If the root cause was a simple clog in the filter, the code will clear and the washer will resume normal operation on the next cycle. If the pump is dead or the drain path remains obstructed, the 5C code will return as soon as the unit attempts to drain again.
