What it means

The OE error code (sometimes displayed as OF, E3, or OC on certain Samsung models) indicates an Overflow Error. The main control board triggers this code when the water level pressure switch detects that the water volume inside the tub has exceeded the maximum safe capacity. As a fail-safe mechanism to prevent catastrophic flooding in your home, the washer will immediately halt the wash cycle, lock the door, and force the drain pump to run continuously to evacuate the excess water. This fault is typically rooted in either a mechanical failure allowing uncommanded water into the tub, or a sensory failure where the machine incorrectly believes it is overflowing due to a faulty pressure switch or trapped air in the pressure hose. The pressure switch operates by measuring air pressure pushed up through a small hose connected to the lower tub. As water fills, air compresses. If the sensor reads a frequency outside the normal operational bandwidth, the PCB assumes an overflow state. Understanding whether the tub is physically overfilling with water or simply reporting a false positive is the critical first step in diagnosing the OE code.

Likely Causes

   Stuck Water Inlet Valve

   The most common cause. Debris or mechanical wear prevents the internal diaphragm of the inlet valve from closing fully, allowing water to seep into the tub even when the machine is turned off.

   Faulty Water Level Pressure Switch

   This sensor converts air pressure from the tub into an electrical frequency for the control board. If the internal diaphragm ruptures or the sensor shorts, it sends a false overflow signal.

   Clogged or Pinched Pressure Hose

   The small air tube connecting the tub to the pressure switch can become blocked by lint, detergent residue, or physically pinched, trapping air and skewing the pressure reading.

   Excessive Suds (Oversudsing)

   Using non-HE detergent or too much detergent creates a massive foam buildup. The foam travels up the pressure hose and tricks the sensor into reading an over-level state.

   Main Control Board Failure

   A stuck relay on the main PCB can send continuous 120V AC to the inlet valve, forcing it to stay open and overfill the tub. This requires multimeter verification.

How to clear / reset

To temporarily clear the OE code and stop the drain pump, disconnect the washer from power for 5 minutes. While unplugged, observe the inside of the drum. If water continues to fill the tub while the machine has no power, your inlet valve is mechanically stuck open and must be replaced immediately—turn off your home's water supply valves to stop the flow. If the water stops when unplugged but the OE code returns immediately upon restoring power, the fault lies in the pressure switch, hose, or control board. A hard reset will not permanently clear the code until the underlying hardware issue is resolved.
