What it means

The LD (Long Drain) error code indicates that the machine control board has detected the water level in the tub is not dropping within the expected timeframe. During the drain cycle, the control board energizes the drain pump and monitors the water level via the pressure transducer or pressure switch. If the pressure sensor does not register an empty tub (reset point) after typically 5 minutes of continuous pump operation, the board flags the LD code. This safety mechanism halts the cycle to prevent potential flooding, overheating of the drain pump motor, or dry-running the spin cycle. The underlying fault is almost always a physical restriction in the drain subsystem, a mechanical failure of the drain pump, or a pneumatic blockage in the pressure sensing circuit.

Likely Causes

   Clogged Drain Pump or Coin Trap

   Debris such as coins, socks, lint, or hair pins can bypass the tub and lodge directly in the drain pump impeller or the pre-pump filter/coin trap, physically stopping water flow.

   Kinked or Blocked Drain Hose

   The external corrugated drain hose may be kinked behind the washer, or the home's plumbing standpipe may be clogged, causing water to back up into the machine.

   Failed Drain Pump Motor

   The drain pump motor windings can short or open electrically. Alternatively, the plastic impeller can shear off the motor shaft, meaning the motor hums but moves no water.

   Clogged Pressure Hose

   Gunk or detergent residue can block the air dome or the clear vinyl hose leading to the pressure switch. The board thinks the tub is full even if the water has actually drained.

   Main Control Board Failure

   In rare cases, the main control board relays fail and do not send the required 120V AC to the drain pump during the drain phase.

How to clear / reset

To temporarily clear the LD code, press the Pause/Cancel button twice, or unplug the washer from the wall outlet for 3 to 5 minutes to hard-reset the control board. However, if water remains in the tub or the drain path is still blocked, the code will trigger again on the very next cycle. You must manually drain the tub—using a wet/dry vacuum or by lowering the drain hose into a shallow bucket—and clear the physical obstruction before the washer will operate normally.
