Whirlpool washer — Error Code LD
The washer is taking too long to drain water from the tub.
What it means
The LD (Long Drain) error code indicates that the machine control board has detected the water level in the tub is not dropping within the expected timeframe. During the drain cycle, the control board energizes the drain pump and monitors the water level via the pressure transducer or pressure switch. If the pressure sensor does not register an empty tub (reset point) after typically 5 minutes of continuous pump operation, the board flags the LD code. This safety mechanism halts the cycle to prevent potential flooding, overheating of the drain pump motor, or dry-running the spin cycle. The underlying fault is almost always a physical restriction in the drain subsystem, a mechanical failure of the drain pump, or a pneumatic blockage in the pressure sensing circuit.
Likely Causes
- 1 Clogged Drain Pump or Coin TrapDebris such as coins, socks, lint, or hair pins can bypass the tub and lodge directly in the drain pump impeller or the pre-pump filter/coin trap, physically stopping water flow.
- 2 Kinked or Blocked Drain HoseThe external corrugated drain hose may be kinked behind the washer, or the home's plumbing standpipe may be clogged, causing water to back up into the machine.
- 3 Failed Drain Pump MotorThe drain pump motor windings can short or open electrically. Alternatively, the plastic impeller can shear off the motor shaft, meaning the motor hums but moves no water.
- 4 Clogged Pressure HoseGunk or detergent residue can block the air dome or the clear vinyl hose leading to the pressure switch. The board thinks the tub is full even if the water has actually drained.
- 5 Main Control Board FailureIn rare cases, the main control board relays fail and do not send the required 120V AC to the drain pump during the drain phase.
How to clear / reset
To temporarily clear the LD code, press the Pause/Cancel button twice, or unplug the washer from the wall outlet for 3 to 5 minutes to hard-reset the control board. However, if water remains in the tub or the drain path is still blocked, the code will trigger again on the very next cycle. You must manually drain the tub—using a wet/dry vacuum or by lowering the drain hose into a shallow bucket—and clear the physical obstruction before the washer will operate normally.

When to call a pro
Call a professional if clearing the external drain hose and checking your home's standpipe does not resolve the LD code. Accessing the drain pump on many Whirlpool models requires removing the outer cabinet or front panel, which can be cumbersome. If you suspect a burned-out drain pump motor, need the pressure switch tested, or require live-voltage diagnostics at the control board, contact Axis. We provide a $90 diagnostic (waived upon authorized repair) and back our work with a 1-year parts and labor warranty.
FAQs
How much does it cost to fix the LD error code?
If it is a simple clog that needs clearing, repair costs are generally just the labor/diagnostic fee. If the drain pump assembly has failed and requires replacement, expect the total cost to range from $150 to $250, including parts and labor.
Can I fix the LD code myself?
Checking the drain hose for kinks and ensuring your wall standpipe isn't overflowing are easy DIY steps. However, if the clog is inside the pump or the pump motor has failed, you will need to disassemble the washer cabinet and use a multimeter, which is better left to a technician.
Will the LD code clear itself once the water drains?
No, the LD code is a hard fault. Even if the water slowly siphons out over time, you must manually reset the control board by pressing Cancel/Pause or power cycling the machine.
How long does it take a technician to fix this?
An experienced technician can usually diagnose the issue, clear a pump obstruction, or replace a faulty drain pump in 30 to 60 minutes.
Will it damage my washer to keep trying to run it?
Yes. Repeatedly forcing the washer to attempt a drain cycle with a blocked pump can overheat and permanently burn out the drain pump motor, or potentially damage the control board relays.
