Whirlpool washer — Error Code LF

What it means

The LF (Long Fill) error code on a Whirlpool washer indicates that the machine's main control board has not detected the correct water level within the programmed time limit, which is typically around 10 minutes. When a wash cycle initiates, the control board sends 120V AC to the water inlet valve solenoids to open the water flow. Simultaneously, it monitors the water level pressure switch or pressure transducer. If the pressure sensor fails to register the required air pressure change indicating a full tub before the timer expires, the control board halts the cycle, shuts off the valves, and triggers the LF code. This fault is fundamentally a water supply or water level sensing failure. It can stem from restricted water flow entering the tub, a siphoning effect where water drains out as fast as it enters, or a failure in the pneumatic sensing loop—specifically the pressure hose and switch—failing to report the actual water level back to the control board.

Likely Causes

   Closed or Restricted Water Supply

   The hot or cold water supply valves at the wall may be partially closed, or the inlet hoses are kinked behind the machine, severely restricting flow.

   Clogged Inlet Valve Screens

   Debris, sediment, or hard water scale blocks the small mesh screens inside the water inlet valve, preventing adequate water flow even with optimal home water pressure.

   Siphoning Drain

   The drain hose is pushed too far down the standpipe or the standpipe is too low (under 39 inches), causing water to siphon out of the tub while it is trying to fill.

   Faulty Water Inlet Valve

   The solenoid coils on the water inlet valve have failed electrically (open circuit) or mechanically stuck closed, failing to open when receiving 120V AC from the control board.

   Pressure Hose or Switch Failure

   The clear plastic air tube connecting the outer tub to the pressure switch is kinked, punctured, or clogged with detergent residue, preventing the pressure switch from sensing the rising water level.

How to clear / reset

To temporarily clear the LF error code, press the Power/Cancel button twice. This will stop the alarm and reset the display. You can also perform a hard reset by unplugging the washer from the wall outlet for 1 minute, then plugging it back in. However, clearing the code does not fix the underlying fault. If the water supply issue, clogged inlet valve screens, or pressure sensing loop is not repaired, the main control board will trigger the LF code again during the fill phase of the very next wash cycle.
